Hyundai Motor America plans CAFE rating of 50 miles per gallon by 2025

Hyundai Motor America said it plans for its lineup of cars and light trucks to have a corporate average fuel economy, or “CAFE” rating of 50 miles per gallon (4.7 L/100 km) by 2025. The company;s plan goes beyond the goals of federal regulators and other manufacturers.
Mr. Krafcik said Hyundai expected to mostly use technologies available today with modifications to minimize fuel consumption. He said the company envisioned a 2025 lineup in which 75 to 80 percent of vehicles still ran on traditional gas engines. He said 15 to 20 percent would be hybrids or hybrid plug-ins, and 5 percent would run on fuel cells or batteries.
Hyundai is among the highest-ranked automakers for fuel economy with an average fuel economy of 33.8 m.p.g. as of March 2009. General Motors, Ford and Chrysler, on average, are all below 30 m.p.g.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration requires automakers to achieve a CAFE rating of 35.5 mpg by 2016. Before those rules came about last year, Hyundai had already said it would reach 35 mpg by 2015, the company says.
