Maruti eyeing 1 million cars sales in 2010

Maruti is all set to cash on the recovering economy and expects to sell 1 million cars in next fiscal year. But as the government would probably roll back the stimulus package and the raw materials prices refuse to come down, the expectations seem tough to realize.

Sales in 2009-10 are expected to jump 26 per cent from 792,166 units in the previous year, with exports set to double to 145,000 units, he said. Maruti, in which Japan’s Suzuki Motor Corp has 54.2 per cent stake, has already sold nearly 731,000 vehicles in the first three quarters of this year.

Chairman RC Bhargava, when asked about the possible rollback of stimulus package told Reuters, “All these are concerns and it is not possible to make a firm accurate forecast of what will happen in the next 15 months.”

Bhargava said exports were likely to be maintained in 2010-11, with sales to new markets such as Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Maruti’s A-Star has already been a huge hit in Europe and the trend is expected to follow in South East Asia where the company has just begun to export Maruti Ritz.
