Fuji Heavy may sell EVs overseas by 2013, plans to produce cars in China and expects to boost sales in the U.S

According to a report in the Japanese business daily Nikkei, citing comments by Fuji Heavy president Ikuo Mori, Subaru brand electric vehicles will be sold overseas as soon as 2013. Mori told Nikkei that the OEM will start with sales to Europe, and plans to gradually expand to North America and elsewhere, depending on demand.
According to Mori, Fuji Heavy could develop and make in-house drive motors, a core component for both electric and hybrid cars, although batteries are likely to be outsourced.

It was previously reported in early October that Toyota was considering co-operating with Fuji Heavy to develop electric vehicles slated to be launched globally in 2012.

This cooperation would use technical data collected on the performance of Subaru’s Stella model. Limited sales of the Subaru Stella plug-in began in June 2009. The report claimed engineers working on the electric car project at Fuji Heavy would merge with the electric car team at Toyota. Toyota’s electric car, based on its FT-EV microcar concept, is scheduled to debut in Japan, Europe and the US by 2012.
Fuji Heavy Industries, in which Toyota Motor holds a 16.5% stake, is the only Japanese automaker that has not produced cars in China and the final decision on producing vehicles with a local partner in China is likely to be made by the end of the fiscal year, according to Ikuo Mori, CEO of the Japanese firm.

The company also expects its auto sales in China to hit 35,000 this year and 50,000 in 2010. By the end of this year, its will add 15 more dealerships to its sales network in the country from 85 in 2008.

The Japanese carmaker may sell 230,000 vehicles in the U.S. next year compared with 215,000 this year, Chief Executive Officer Ikuo Mori, 62, said in an interview at the company’s head office in Tokyo
